Helping Homeowners Stay Safe, Warm, and Independent

Our Critical Home Repair program helps low-income homeowners in Pierce and St. Croix Counties address urgent safety and structural issues so they can remain in their homes.

About the Program

Critical Home Repair is a separate program from our homeownership program. It serves existing homeowners — not new home buyers — whose homes need urgent repairs affecting health, safety, accessibility, or structural integrity.

Repairs are completed with volunteer labor and, where required, licensed contractors. Eligible homeowners partner with us by paying for materials at a reduced, income-based cost and, when possible, working alongside our volunteers.

What We Can Repair

Eligible repairs address urgent safety and structural issues. Examples include:

Roofing

Repairs to leaking or failing roofs that threaten the safety and dryness of your home.

Electrical

Correction of unsafe wiring, faulty panels, and other electrical hazards.

Plumbing

Repairs to failing plumbing, water heaters, and related systems essential to daily living.

Accessibility

Ramps, grab bars, and other modifications that keep your home safe and accessible.

Heating & Safety

Furnace and heating repairs and other urgent issues affecting health and safety.

Other Urgent Needs

Other critical issues are considered on a case-by-case basis based on urgency and available funding.

Who Qualifies

You may be eligible for Critical Home Repair if:

  • You own your home

    You own and occupy a home in Pierce or St. Croix County, Wisconsin.

  • You meet income guidelines

    Your household income falls within our income guidelines, which are based on area median income. Income guidelines apply.

  • Your need is urgent

    Your home has an urgent repair need affecting safety, accessibility, or structural integrity that you cannot address on your own.

Meeting these criteria does not guarantee selection. Repair capacity depends on funding, volunteer availability, and the scope of work.

How to Apply

Download and complete the Critical Home Repair application. It covers your household information, income, and a description of the repairs your home needs.

Submit It to Our Office

Return your completed application by mail or email to info@scvhabitat.org, or contact us with questions at (715) 386-8727.

Application Review

Our staff reviews applications for eligibility, urgency, and scope of work, and may schedule a home visit to assess the repair need.

Repair Partnership

Approved projects are scheduled as funding and volunteer capacity allow, and we partner with you on completing the repairs.

Who is eligible for Critical Home Repair?

What kinds of repairs qualify?
We address urgent issues affecting health, safety, and structural integrity — including roofing, electrical hazards, failing plumbing and water heaters, furnace and heating repairs, and accessibility modifications like ramps and grab bars. Other critical issues are considered on a case-by-case basis based on urgency and available funding.
Do I have to own my home to apply?
Yes. Critical Home Repair serves existing homeowners — not new home buyers. If you're looking to purchase an affordable home, our homeownership program may be a better fit — see our Homeownership page.
What does the program cost?
Eligible homeowners partner with us by paying for materials at a reduced, income-based cost. Labor is provided by volunteers and, where required, licensed contractors. When possible, homeowners also work alongside our volunteers on their own repairs.

How soon will the repairs happen?
Approved projects are scheduled as funding and volunteer capacity allow. Urgency is a key factor in how projects are prioritized, so we encourage you to apply as soon as you become aware of a critical need.
