How does St. Croix Valley Habitat pay for construction costs?
St. Croix Valley Habitat relies on the support of sponsors, donors, and volunteers to help build homes, saving the homebuyer thousands in labor and materials. Through different kinds of support from individuals, corporations, contractors, public entities, and many others, Habitat is able to reduce or eliminate some of the traditional barriers working people face as they try to buy a home. All kinds of different people apply and are encouraged to apply for home ownership – from big and small families to disabled persons, veterans, and senior citizens.
Who are the house sponsors?

Can anyone become a St. Croix Habitat homebuyer?
St. Croix Valley Habitat homes are for homebuyers who meet specific qualifications to ensure success. Our homeowner partners must be willing to work to build their home – contributing between 250 and 500 hours of “sweat equity” by swinging a hammer on the job site, recruiting volunteers, and other administrative tasks and must have lived or worked in Pierce or St. Croix County for at least six months prior to the application. Along the way, homeowners learn about construction and maintenance of their homes, take a budgeting and financial fitness course, and build lasting friendships with volunteers from the community.
Does St. Croix Valley Habitat renovate existing homes?
Habitat affiliates across the nation, including ours, are participating in the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative – rehabilitating existing homes using the same proven Habitat model, through our A Brush with Kindness program. St. Croix Valley Habitat also partners with local agencies on their building projects, and works to ensure that all people have access to affordable housing.
Is the ReStore only open to contractors or Habitat homeowners?
No! Our ReStores are open to the public Tuesday – Saturday, and all proceeds from sales of donated materials go directly back into our home building and renovation. Check our ReStore page for more information!
